What Photography Basic Concepts Beginners Need to Know

Photography is one of the ways for your kids to capture the world, to express what they see in their eyes. It is easy to take a photo, they just need to press the button of the camera. But it is difficult for them to take high-quality photos. So if you want your kids to do it, you need to teach them some photography concepts.

Today we will talk about aperture, shutter speed, ISO speed, exposure. Besides, we will also talk more about the basis of photographing in the future.

Aperture is a hole in the camera allowing light to pass through

Aperture is one of the concepts in photography, which is the hole within your lens, which allows light to pass through. And you could control the aperture blades inside the lens to change the aperture as you like.

If you change the aperture smaller, less light is go through. On the contrary, if the aperture is larger, more light is allowed to pass through. If you still cannot understand, you can imagine it as people’s eyes.

Aperture is measured in units F-number or F-stops, such as f/2.0, f/2.8, f/4.0, and so on. The smaller the f-number is, the larger the aperture hole is, therefore more light reaches the sensors. As the aperture steps down, the amount of light entering the sensor also increases.

The change of aperture also affects how your photo looks. By adjusting the aperture, you can control how much of the image appears in focus behind and in front of the subject you are focusing on.

For example, if you are taking a photo of someone standing in front of the window, from which you can see the trees outsides, you can use the lens' smallest aperture to make the tree relatively sharp in focus. Instead, if you want to focus on the person, you can use the lens' largest aperture, the background will be blurry.

Shutter speed controls the time exposing to light

Shutter speed, also called exposure time, means the amount of time a camera shutter is open to expose light into the camera sensors. It is measured in seconds, like 1/60, 1/125.

Shutter speed can be divided into fast, slow, and long shutter speeds.

A fast shutter speed is used to freeze action completely. Through it, you can photograph fast-moving objects such as a flying bird, or a car driving past. When photographing water with a fast shutter speed, each droplet will hang perfectly sharp in the air, which may not be seen to our naked eyes.

Long shutter speeds are usually above 1 second. You can use long shutter speeds to capture movement intentionally. However, if the shutter speed is too long, the moving subjects in your photo will become fuzzy.

Shutter speeds from 1/100th second to 1 second are considered relatively low. You can use it to photograph the Milky Way or other objects at night. Long shutter speeds are used by landscape photographers to give a sense of motion on rivers and waterfalls while keeping everything else sharp.

ISO shows the sensitivity of the camera to light

ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to light. ISO is measured from 100, 200, 400, and so on. And the lower the ISO number, the less sensitive the camera is to the light.

Increasing the ISO number will gradually brighten the photo, so it can help you take photos in a dark environment or allow you to be more flexible with your aperture and shutter speed.

However, raising ISO also has drawbacks. If you take a photo with a high ISO, it is likely to have “noise” in the picture. Therefore, only if you are unable to brighten the image using the shutter speed or aperture, you can try to raise ISO.

If it’s possible, try to use your camera’s lowest ISO(base ISO), which is usually ISO 100 or 200. If there is plenty of light, you can use a low ISO to reduce the appearance of noise.

If there is not enough light for your camera to capture a sharp, bright photo, you should raise the ISO.

Exposure is consist of aperture, shutter speed and ISO

Shutter speed, aperture, and ISO are the elements that combine to create exposure. And these three elements work together to create a photograph.

We can regard taking a photograph as filling a bucket with water from a hose.

The aperture is like the size of the hose. Different sizes of aperture allow different levels of light to get through the sensor in the same amount of time.

The shutter speed is like the valve on the faucet. You need to control the time of opening the faucet to collect enough water. This is the same to the shutter speed, which needs to use long or slow shutter speed to get enough light.

While the ISO is like the size of the bucket.

There are many ways to properly expose a photo, but choosing one is part of the creative process, as each method affects the appearance of the photo.
